Complexion always has been my least favorite make-up area: I never really paid much attention to it and I did a few years with the same concealer (Maybelline Fit Me) and the same powder (Mac Pressed Powder). Until the last couple of months when the Youtube Beauty World became all about primers, concealers, setting powders and setting sprays. Even though I am fashionably late, I finally joined the complexion party!
It’s been a minute since the amazing Mac x Patrick Starrr collection came out but the Netherlands had to wait way longer for the collection than the US, so I didn’t get my hands on the Setting Powder (Patricks Powder) until about a month ago. All the Beauty Youtubers were so over the moon positive about the powder that ofcourse I wanted to get my hands on it.
I love love love how the powder looks. The holo packaging and logo is obviously awesome, but I care more about the product itself. It’s simple but classy. A shiny silver lid and a see through matte jar.
It’s a pretty big jar for a setting powder but you guys… THE HOLES ARE SO SMALL. It takes forever to get a good amount of the product in the lid to work with and I wish they would’ve made the holes in the jar bigger.
Anyway, back to what really matters, haha. So the powder is peachy in color and that scared me for a second because it looked pretty dark and too warm for my pale skin.
I want to compare Patrick’s Powder to the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder at the Rimmel Match Perfection Silky Loose Powder which I both like.
The Laura Mercier jar I have is a deluxe size but the Rimmel powder is full sized so you can see how big the Patrick’s Powder jar is!
Next to each other you can also see really the difference in color (swatches are left to right: Rimmel – Laura Mercier – Patricks Powder), even though they are all translucent. Laura Mercier is quite yellow compared to the others, Rimmel is the lightest, a tiny bit peachy and the best match to my skin tone and the Patricks Powder is the most peachy.
When I use the powders you can’t tell the difference in color because they are all translucent like they are supposed to, but there is an actual difference in finish/effect. Patrick’s Powder is the best in blurring and making my under eye area even. The Laura Mercier powder is the best in brightening my under eye area and the Rimmel Powder is the best invisible powder.
In formula and use the three powders are also quite different. The Rimmel and Laura Mercier powders are really easy to bake with because it’s easy to place the product on the face with a brush or beauty sponge. Patrick’s Powder is way more fine and is therefore harder to pick up.
Me using Patrick’s Powder to bake under my eyes & my finished look using Patricks Powder.
I also really wanted to say something about how the powders look on my face and how long they wear/if they crease etc. but I really do not have enough setting powder knowledge to say something useful about that. I know I like the Rimmel and the Laura Mercier powder more in use. I like Patrick’s Powder the most for an even & blurred skin and the most comfortable on my skin is the Laura Mercier en Patrick’s Powder (the Rimmel Powder makes my skin veeeeery dry and irritated if I bake too long so I usually only use a little bit to set my face and I don’t bake with it anymore).
So basically I like all three powders for different reasons and I can’t pick a favorite to be honest. I do want to say that Patrick’s Powder is not ground breaking for me personally so I am fine to stick with my Rimmel powder on a budget and with the Laura Mercier powder if I can splurge a bit more, since Patrick’s Powder was Limited Edition and I only have one!
What is your favorite setting powder? Do you have any recommendations for me?
