Welcome to Beauty Blogmas Day 6! Today we are checking out the newest lipstick finish launches by MAC Cosmetics. I didn’t see much hype about this launch even though a new finish is usually a pretty big deal, right? But maybe it just wasn’t that big in the Netherlands and I might have missed the hype in the USA. Anyway, I was curious because I love me some MAC lipsticks, so here’s my review on one of the MAC Powder Kiss Lipsticks!
The Powder Kiss Lipstick is described (on the MAC website) as ‘A moisture-matte weightless lipstick that delivers a romantic blur of effortless soft-focus colour.’
The regular matte lipstick is described as ‘A creamy rich Lipstick formula with high colour payoff in a no-shine matte finish.’
And for a complete overview, a satin lipstick is described as ‘A creamy Lipstick formula with a soft cushiony feel, medium-to-full buildable coverage and a satin finish.’
I picked up the Powder Kiss shade 314 Mull It Over (a Dirty Peach shade). The lipstick comes in the classic black MAC lipstick bullet but instead of being a little shiny, this bullet is powdery matte.
The way the lipstick looks makes me think a lot about the Pat McGrath MatteTrance lipsticks. They also look powdery and matte in the bullet. I don’t know if Pat McGrath was the first to come up with this kind of matte lipstick but it’s the first I ever tried with this finish.
The lipstick is very creamy, almost buttery smooth and indeed feels a bit powdery on the lips. The finish is soft matte and not drying at all. My lips do feel a bit ‘slippery’ and the lipstick is not budge proof because it slides around a bit, way more than the original MAC matte finish lipsticks.
I do love how soft the finish of this lipstick looks but I feel like there’s not much of a different with a matte or satin finish from MAC. I decided to check it out with some comparison swatches.
These are all MAC lipsticks with different finishes. From left to right:
Good Health (Satin), Mull It Over (Powder Kiss), Fancied (Matte), Brave (Satin), Fanfare (Cremesheen), Chatterbox (Amplified) and Syrup (Lustre).
The shade of Mull It Over made me think of Good Health so that’s why I swatched it on the left. Good Health is a bit more pinky peach, where Mull It Over is a bit more dirty/browny peach.
The swatches show that there’s indeed rarely a difference in the finish of the matte lipstick and the Powder Kiss one. The satin is a tiny bit more shiny but the difference on the lips is very hard to see.
When deciding between the matte finish versus the Powder Kiss finish I will base my decision on the shade I want to pick. If the exact same shade would be available in both finishes I would go for the matte finish because I feel like it stays on longer and I like the smell of the Powder Kiss lipstick a little less than the original vanilla scent on all the other lipsticks. It is very similar but just a little bit different.
When it comes to formula, the matte finish feels a bit heavier than the Powder Kiss lipstick. So that’s up to whatever you feel like wearing on the lips!
Have you tried the MAC Powder Kiss Lipsticks yet? What do you think?
This one is pretty. I’ve never tried any of these, but I’m sure I’ll soon!
